Hemmed In Hollow is the story of a teen-aged brother and sister trying to survive amidst regular abuse by their step mother and step brother. Their father is a boot-legger and is gone most of the time. Living in deep poverty and suffering abuse, Laurel is, also, taunted for stuttering by her class-mates and drops out of school. But when a new school-teacher arrives to replace the other one, she befriends both Laurel and Donnie. At this same time a new doctor moves up on the top of the mountain. His son Jude befriends both Donnie and Laurel and refuses to turn on them and staunchly defending them, despite taunts and jeers from his class-mates. Laurel finds (to her dismay) that she is hopelessly in love with Jude; but, the sheriff's daughter has, also, set her sight on Jude. She is determined to have him in which ever way she can.
