Florida encapsulates the East Coast surf scene unlike any other Atlantic State. The most southern point on mainland USA conjures up visions of warm weather, sub tropical water temperatures, and a whole year round, beach life environment, that even California has problems equaling. While this is true in the south, where the warm Gulf Stream current kisses the coastline near Miami, Florida hides a much more complex persona than the stereotyped image of sun and surf. The barrier island theme continues the length of the coastline, and the only interruption to the predominantly NE facing coastline is the huge tract of off limits land at Cape Canaveral. Florida is also home to the most prolific surfing champions, in both the men’s and women’s divisions of international surfing competition. While West Coast surfers sneer at the absence of regular ground swell and sizable wave challenges, the average Florida surfer continues to make the most of what is available, which can range from 1ft windchop to 20ft faces in a hurricane swell. While the danger from hurricanes is real, surfers still prey for their late summer arrival to bring some respite from the small summer conditions. Once again, it is the man-made structures that provide the best line-ups, sprinkled along the extensive Atlantic seaboard.
